WHAT EVERY

REPUBLICAN

INDEPENDENT

AND DEMOCRAT

MUST KNOW ABOUT WV's 2008

PRIMARY ON MAY 13TH

Regardless of political party or personal ideology, EVERY person living within a democracy deserves a STRONG voice. Fortunately, all voters registered as Democrats (plus all Independents  who choose a Democratic ballot for the May primary) will have a dominant voice in the nomination process. Such is not the case in the GOP primary. How is it that who choose a Republican ballot for the May primary) will have almost no voice in selecting the Republican nominee for President of the United States?  Read on!

GOP PRIMARY IN WV

VOTERS LEFT OUT OF PRESIDENTIAL RACE - AGAIN.

Once again, GOP leaders have managed to marginalize the voices of ordinary voters in WV.  Those who choose to participate in the GOP primary on May 13 will find that the vast majority of Presidential delegates were selected on February 5th and are already committed to Governor Huckabee. To see just how much the GOP has marginalized voters interested in choosing the next President, all you need to do is to compare the number and percent of delegates to be chosen the the Republican Primary (immediately below), to those in the Democratic Primary (just below the GOP data).

Number of delegates to be chosen by voters in May Primary:    9*

Delegates already chosen in state convention:                           18**

Unpledged delegates (Chair of WV GOP + 2 members

of Republican National Committee):                                                      3

Total number of delegates to vote at GOP Nat'l Convention:   30

1. Percent of delegates to be chosen by voters in May 13 Primary:  30%

2. Percent of GOP delegates already chosen in state convention:      60%

3. Percent of GOP delegates restricted to winner-take-all rule:          90%

4. Percent of unpledged delegates:                                                  10%

5. Delegates guaranteed to 2nd & 3rd place candidates:                 0%

* The GOP winner-take-all rule will commit all 9 delegates to the top vote-getter. Historically, GOP voters in WV just throw in the towel and support the candidate who is strongest at the time of WV's primary. Does John McCain really need a coronation at the GOP convention?

** The GOP winner-take-all rule has committed all 18 delegates to the top vote-getter at the state convention (Huckabee), whose race may go no further than Super Tuesday. Even if you favor Huckabee, how fair is that?

DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

DEMOCRATS and INDEPENDENTS

GET A STRONG VOICE!

ALL voters deserve a strong voice in the selecting the next President - regardless of politics. If you are already registered as a Democrat or Independent (no party, you are eligible and very welcome to vote in our primary. If you are registered as a Republican (or other party), now may be a good time to register as a Democrat - or even as an Independent. To see that Democrats really value the voice of voters, just compare the number and percent of delegates to be chosen in the GOP Primary (above), to those in our primary (just below).

Number of delegates to be chosen by voters in May Primary:      28*

Delegates to be chosen in June 14 state convention:                      0

Unpledged delegates:                                                                 11**

Total number of delegates to vote at Dem Nat'l Convention:   39

1. Percent of delegates to be chosen by voters in May 13 Primary:  72%

2. Percent of Dem delegates to be chosen in state convention:         0%**

3. Percent of Dem delegates restricted to winner-take-all rule:            0%

4. Percent of unpledged delegates:                                                  28%

5. Delegates guaranteed to 2nd & 3rd place candidates:                - *

* These 28 delegates will be roughly allocated according to voter preference (as reflected in May 13th Primary).

** Eleven unpledged delegates consisting of Governor Manchin, WV's four members of Congress, 1 distinguished party leader, plus one delegate selected by the WV Democratic Executive Committee will also be seated at the Democratic National Convention..
